    Hmmm...

Question: Does negative reaction to Legend of the Seeker make a second season less likely? I know many fans of the book are harshly speaking out against the series, but I love the show. — Maria O.

Matt Roush: The worst thing that could happen to a show like this is for it to be ignored by its fan base. The show did not get very positive reviews (including from me), and I'm not keeping up with fan reaction, positive or negative. But what will determine Seeker's future has all to do with business: how well it performs in syndication for the local stations and how well it sells in the overseas markets. I haven't seen any early returns yet, but Disney has made quite an investment with launching this new fantasy series into syndication, so I'd expect them to stick with it unless it proves to be an utter dud. But while I'm on the subject of TV fantasy, I wanted to revisit the topic of HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones (the Song of Ice and Fire series). HBO has officially green-lit a pilot, based on a truly terrific (though currently still unfinished) series of novels. This is no guarantee the show will go to series, but it's a good sign.

I'm anxious to see those returns; it'd be interesting if the show caught on more with people that haven't read the series.

Hi there, Ms D. Sorry about the ruckus. My first reaction early this AM was off a bit, I think, and when I wanted to correct it, I saw you'd, very legitimately, gotten irked by some of the comments. Yes, there is a separate thread for "should Danielle do hardcore". Should you? You tell me--its your decision, but I think a bunch of us mucked and muddied it up, and for my part, I wanted to apologize directly. I also wanted to apologize if I misquote you. I could have heard something wrong on the video log, could have remembered wrong, could have taken what you said in the wrong context, which if I did (and I probably, almost certainly, okay I did) get wrong, I want to apologize for that, too. Not only have you nothing to apologize for yourself, not only should you not have to worry about what you say or how your phrase it in your own house, but you quite simply don't need the added stress of people telling you to do X, Y or Z when what you want to do is A, B or C, not when you and Rob (and probably Lia & Ashley, too) are getting things set to go premium in a month or so, not when you're getting ready to hit the books and take the odd nap during a lecture, and that sort of thing, so once again I'd like to say I am sorry, and state here, publicly, that yes indeed I am a moron (sometimes). Hope your day goes by with less stress and more joy, Ms D.

Here I was coming to say "have a great day" (BTW, have a great day!), and my eye got drawn to some of what grande351 said. I was, but probably shouldn't be, surprised to find your mom and I are the same age. That's a bit of a mind-trip for me. For what its worth, I always treat you and everyone else (try to anyway) as equals in every respect (I'm no better than you, I'm no worse than you), and treat you the same way that I'd want to be treated myself. It struck me, like it struck grande351, just how you don't act like someone our age might think a 20 y.o. acts nowadays. I guess the easiest way to put it is that while I'm nearly twice your age, it doesn't feel like such a gap--the thing I'm not sure about, though, is if that means you make me feel like I'm back in my early 20s, or that despite your age you're much more mature than I'd have assumed for some one from your generation (consarned young whipper-snappers, stay off the grass!). Did that make sense? And I sincerely hope your bro-in-law is home much earlier than scheduled now--IMHO, he shouldn't be deployed with a child on the way, period (for that matter, I have to ask, if Russia of all places can make it a law that a mother gets 1 year paid leave to take care of a newborn, why in the heck can't the US do the same?). I hope you have a great day. Hasta luego, Ms D!

Wow, I asked for your opinion and I got it! That's one of the things I like most about you.
I'm in basic agreement with what you said. I actually voted for Bush the first time around, but needless to say, I'm disappointed with the way his presidency has turned out. I've always been a registered Republican, but I'm becoming much more independent as the years go by. I'm a fiscal conservative; for smaller government and lower deficits (which Bush isn't by a longshot!) and more of a Libertarian when it comes to social and moral issues. I don't think that's any of the government's business. I have no problem with people of faith, but I'm not happy with how the evangelicals have "hijacked" my party. Like you I'm worried about Social Security. I don't feel that it'll be around for me either. This needs to be addressed, but no one in Washington seems to have the will to take it on. Like your mom, my 401k has lost a lot of value, but I would tell her to ride it out. There's plenty of time before we'll need it. I feel bad for the ones who just retired or are planning to in the next 3 to 5 years. The bursting of the housing bubble, like the dot-com bubble in the late 90's, only worse, has drug down the entire economy! The war is a big issue too. I was initially supportive of the decision to go into Iraq, but with the horrible way it's been handled by Washington, it's now a big mess. We need to start pulling troops out. This has to be done very carefully though, so as to not further weaken our position in the Middle East. I wish Obama all the best. After all, we're all in the same boat here. I hope puts a solid team together to address the many problems the country faces.

I hope that everything goes well with your brother-in-law's deployment and that he can come back to his family soon! It's very humbling to witness the sacrifices our service people and their families have to make on our behalf.

I'm surprised to learn that your mom is only 39, one year younger than me! (Hmmm...is she married??.... Just kidding ). I'm sure she's beautiful and a good person. After all, she produced you and the apple never falls far from the tree . Sometimes I have to remind myself that you're only 20 years old, because you're way more mature and wise than most others in your age group.
