Don't buy Canon GL2. It's not even HD, just standard definition (even though it has 3CCD). And I think it's oldest technology of these camcorders.

All other three on your short list are HDV camcorders. It all comes down to your own preferences and the purpose you are purchasing it for. Somebody shooting mainly on trips and travel would probably choose a light weight camcorder. However, to some other user weight would be no issue at all.

- HV 40 looks more like a consumer model, whereas the two other Sonys look 'pro'.
- Sony FX7 has 37.4-748mm, f/1.6-2.8 lens. (Thus pretty decent wide angle to start with, even though you may like to purchase some 0.7x wide angle converter lens.
- Sony A1U has 41-410mm focal length (less wide angle). However, it has slightly larger image sensor (1/3 inch) likely making it better to shoot low light (as compared to FX7's 1/4-inch sensor).

If you want to look 'pro' while doing it, choosing either FX7 or A1U might be the way to go. However, for every casual shooter Canon HV40 is a wise choice; it's light and small.
