Maybe who writes the most appealing essay -- Why I Want To... or -- What I Would Do If... Then work your way through your top choices. You might find good new talent(s).

Might as well do as broad of a series as imaginable while you're at it, possibly create categories so everyone has a chance. You might consider variety and lots of it. Stretch and challenge yourself.
